BIOFACH 2024
Trend scouting is one of our favourite jobs: We were inspired by new ingredients, products and concepts while visiting Biofach, the world’s leading trade fair for organic food.
As a full-service partner, not only do we produce nutritional supplements , we also provide ideas and inspiration for new products.
Our organic chocolate flavour multi-protein shake is a newly created product to help you meet this demand. It delivers a lovely dark chocolatey flavour, naturally sweetened with organic coconut blossom sugar. As aromatic organic cocoa is the dominant flavour, the sweetness is subtle. The organic protein shake contains organic plant proteins from five different sources (pea, sunflower, hemp, flaxseed and pumpkin) – two of which are sprouted proteins. We’d be delighted to send you a sample. Of course, we are also available for other enquiries about organic products.
Legal requirements for organic products
You need to consider many legal pitfalls when developing organic products. For example, did you know that the use of flavourings is restricted for organic products? Only organic flavourings or ‘organic-suitable’ flavourings may be used in organic products. For a flavouring to be organic, all flavouring components and carriers must come from organic production. Organic-suitable flavourings are conventional ingredients that may make up a maximum of 5 % of an organic foodstuff. Their favouring component must only consist of natural flavours and extracts, and 95 % must come from the named ingredient of the flavouring. For example, a natural lemon flavouring is only deemed suitable for organic products if at least 95 % of the flavouring component comes from lemons.
This restriction to organic flavourings and organic-suitable flavourings often presents a challenge when developing organic products, also in terms of taste. Their taste is usually more subtle compared with conventional flavourings and natural flavourings that are not suitable for use in organic products. This is why we are always looking for novel flavourings, particularly in the organic sector, to ensure we offer the ultimate taste sensations.
It is also important to note that only a limited selection of additives is permitted in the organic sector, which means that the choice of possible sweeteners or thickening agents is significantly lower than for a conventional product. You can find a table detailing the authorised additives for organic foods in EU Regulation 2021/1165. However, you also need to consider the EC Regulation 1333/2008 on food additives. For an additive to be used in a specific organic product, it must be authorised for both organic products in accordance with Regulation 2021/1165 and for the relevant product category according to Regulation 1333/2008.
To save you worrying about the legal requirements, we are happy to offer our expertise and develop your tailor-made organic product.
