Daily rations or a total diet replacement are only for healthy overweight or obese adults who want to reduce their weight! This is special diet where all meals throughout the day are replaced by special products. There is a difference between a Low Calorie Diet (LCD) and a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD). For a LCD the recommended energy intake is 1,200 kcal while for a VLCD it is between 600 and 800 kcal. In order to prevent deficiencies, specific rules and regulations apply for products intended to be used as a total diet replacement
In particular, when it comes to total meal replacement products, it is important to keep an eye on the current legal framework conditions. You can always rely on Biohealth in this respect.
Regulation (EU) No 609/2013 (FSG) is the general regulation containing general information on foods for specific groups of consumers. It is also called the "Regulation on Foods for Specific Consumer Groups" or, following the English terminology, FSG Regulation (eng. Foods for Specific Groups- FSG). The special requirements for the daily ration or total diet replacement are regulated in 2017/1798. The specific requirements for foods for special medical purposes can be found in 2016/128.
This regulation replaces Directive 2009/39/EC on foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional use (known as the dietary framework directive). Different from meal replacement products, food intended to replace the entire diet (total diet replacement) fall within the scope of the FSG Regulation (Food for Specific Groups).
