Mix of benefits in dietary supplements

All-in-one products for a range of needs

Consumers are looking for practical food supplements that sensibly combine several needs in one. This is precisely where the ‘Mix of Benefits’ trend comes in. Instead of offering a separate product for each area of application, smart all-in-one products specifically combine two or three related benefits in a well-thought-out formulation.

But: Which combinations really make sense? What are the limitations of all-in-one formulations? And what is key to ensuring that a product not only looks promising on paper, but can also be successfully realised in terms of both taste and technology? As a contract manufacturer of dietary supplements, we regularly support companies in making precisely these decisions.

Our experience shows that successful all-in-one formulations are not created by cramming as many ingredients as possible into a product, but rather through a clear strategy.

What does ‘Mix of Benefits’ mean?

The ‘Mix of Benefits’ approach combines active ingredients with different areas of action in a single formulation. Well-known all-in-one products include, for example, multivitamin supplements, ‘greens’ products and vitamin and mineral blends.

Currently, however, combinations that clearly target a specific audience with several interrelated benefits are becoming increasingly important, for example in the field of women’s health.

The biggest challenge:
delivering greater value without unnecessary complexity

When developing products, many brands are faced with questions such as: Should the product offer as many benefits as possible? Or is it better to maintain a clear focus? After all, this is often what ultimately determines success in the market.

We have summarised the respective pros and cons:

Dietary supplements with a specific, single objective

Products designed for a single purpose offer a number of advantages:

  • targeted support for a specific need,
  • often shorter lists of ingredients,
  • and, in many cases, lower production costs.

However, as soon as consumers take several dietary supplements with a single purpose at the same time, challenges can arise: after all, taking multiple supplements also means more capsules, tablets or powders per day. Furthermore, individual ingredients can interact with one another and may inadvertently be consumed twice.

All-in-one products

The main advantage of all-in-one products lies in their ease of use. Many consumers prefer a single solution rather than several individual products. At the same time, comprehensive formulations present certain challenges:

  • greater complexity in formulation,
  • in some cases higher raw material costs,
  • not every consumer requires all the nutrients contained in the product.

Our experience in product development therefore shows that the strongest concepts lie between these two extremes.

Our recommendation: All-in-one formulations with a clear focus

We currently see the most exciting developments and the greatest opportunities in ‘mix-of-benefits’ products, which combine two or three closely related themes. This allows your brand to benefit from clear positioning, a straightforward USP, tangible benefits for your target audience and greater differentiation from traditional products with a single focus.

It is precisely where target audiences overlap that particularly exciting product concepts emerge.

Three ‘mix-of-benefits’ concepts with great potential

1. Women’s health and mental balance

The menstrual cycle and the menopause often manifest themselves in more than just physical changes. Many women also report mood swings, inner restlessness and tiredness during these stages of life.

A carefully designed all-in-one formulation combines precisely these two areas. For example, with ingredients such as monk’s pepper extract, yam root extract, shatavari extract, vitamin B6, ashwagandha root extract, hop flower extract and vitamin D.

One example from our portfolio is EveRelief. A drink that combines selected plant extracts with inactivated postbiotics, valuable micronutrients and natural acai-lemongrass flavouring.

2. Combining sleep and muscle building in a smart way

At first glance, sleep and exercise seem like two opposites. But in practice, the two complement each other perfectly.

Casein supplies the body with amino acids for hours on end, making it ideal for consumption in the evening. Combined with ingredients from sleep formulations, such as melatonin, magnesium, valerian root extract and lavender flower powder, the result is a product with a clear intended use.

Are you looking for a ready-made white-label product concept? Here you go: our creamy sleep cocoa with a chocolate-pistachio flavour, which combines 6 g of casein with plant-based melatonin.

3. Combining gut health and the immune system

The gut is home to around 70 per cent of all the body’s immune cells. This is where nutrients from food are absorbed, whilst at the same time preventing harmful bacteria and other substances from entering the body. A healthy gut microbiome is thought to have a positive effect on the immune system. That is why a combination of fibre and immune-boosting nutrients such as vitamin C and zinc is particularly beneficial.

Combine these ingredients with matcha powder, and you have a product perfect for a personalised morning ritual: our white-label fibre drink with matcha.

Or are you looking for a green shake that combines a well-balanced formula with outstanding flavour? We’ve developed it for you using a blend of selected green superfoods such as matcha powder, spirulina powder, chlorella powder and wheatgrass powder, along with vitamins, minerals and other beneficial ingredients such as digestive enzymes. We recommend the strawberry-lime flavour. Sounds good?
