Natural Hormones & Hormone Balance Supplements

Hormones are important messenger substances in the human body. The amounts of different hormones in the body can vary greatly depending on age, gender and hormonal cycle status. This time, we would like to focus on herbal powders and extracts that are intended to provide the necessary hormone balance for women and men.

Communication experts of the body

Hormones are produced in endocrine glands such as the hypothalamus, thyroid and gonads. In terms of their function, they are similar to communication devices such as a smartphone, as they are used by the body to communicate between cells and organs. The hormones reach their target organs via the blood, where they bind to specific receptors and trigger certain processes and functions in the body. They regulate numerous functions such as metabolism, blood pressure and reproduction. For example, oestrogen controls the menstrual cycle in women.

Hormonal similarities and differences between men and women

However, women are not the only ones with oestrogen, as both men and women produce the same hormones - just in different concentrations. Women produce more oestrogen and progesterone, while men typically have more testosterone.

In women, oestrogens are important for the development of female sexual characteristics and the regulation of the menstrual cycle. Progesterone is involved in the same processes in the female body as oestrogen and acts as its counterpart. Testosterone is also produced in small quantities by the female body. This can influence libido and energy levels in women.

In men, on the other hand, testosterone is the most important sex hormone and is responsible for the development of male sexual characteristics, muscle growth and sperm production. However, oestrogens and progesterone are also produced in smaller quantities by men. Oestrogens, for example, play a key role in bone stability. Progesterone is an important precursor for the formation of testosterone and also regulates the oestrogen balance as an antagonist to oestrogen.

Natural hormone balance & well-being

As hormones are involved in a variety of processes as messenger substances, a balanced hormone balance is of great importance for energy, mood, sleep, libido and metabolism. For example, a lack of oestrogen and progesterone can lead to sleep disorders, depressive moods and mood swings. A lack of testosterone, on the other hand, leads to mood swings, listlessness and loss of libido. There are many reasons for a hormone imbalance. Stress, lack of sleep, mental illness, an unbalanced diet, hormonal contraceptives and certain medications as well as certain phases of life (e.g. the menopause) can upset the hormone balance.

Focus on women

Hormone balance supplements for women generally focus on the female menstrual cycle and the problems associated with it. These include, for example

  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

  • Menstrual pain (e.g. abdominal pain, headaches, breast tenderness)

  • Psychological complaints (listlessness, mood swings, irritability)

  • Premenopausal and menopausal symptoms (hot flushes, sweating, mood swings, sleep disorders)

In addition to vitamins and minerals, Hormone Balance supplements often also contain plant-based raw materials. Some plant substances contain so-called phytoestrogens. In the following, we would like to take a look at some of the herbal substances used in women's health supplements:

#women's healthMönchspfeffer

Monk's pepper

According to studies, it is primarily intended to lower prolactin levels. An excess disturbs the natural balance between oestrogen and progesterone and can lead to symptoms such as headaches, tiredness and PMS symptoms. According to some studies, monk's pepper is also said to have a positive effect during the menopause by promoting the balance between oestrogen and progesterone, although there are comparatively fewer studies on this.

#women's healthAshwagandha um ganzen und gemahlen

Ashwagandha

It is often used in dietary supplements as it is said to reduce stress and lower cortisol levels. As stress is a possible cause of hormonal imbalance and associated complaints, ashwagandha can therefore help indirectly. There is also evidence from studies that the plant has a calming and mood-enhancing effect and is said to support the libido.

#women's healthShatavari Wurzel

Shatavari

Shatavari is a phytoestrogen-containing plant. Its name, "she who has a hundred husbands", refers to the plant's use in gynecology and its positive effects. In the traditional Indian healing art of Ayurveda, the plant has been used for several thousand years to treat menstrual problems, the desire to have children and menopausal symptoms. However, modern studies on the raw material are very limited and the effect of the plant has hardly been proven in clinical studies.

#women's healthHopfendolten

Hops

Hops are also considered a plant that contains phytoestrogens. Hops are said to alleviate typical menopause symptoms such as hot flushes and have a calming and sleep-promoting effect, which is why the raw material is mainly used in menopause products.

#women's healthYamswurzel

Yams

The active ingredient diosgenin is a precursor of the hormone progesterone. However, the human body cannot convert diosgenin ingested with food into progesterone. Nevertheless, when taken over a longer period of time, yams are said to have a harmonizing effect on the hormone balance. The root is also said to have an antispasmodic effect, which is why it is used in both menstrual and menopause products.

What are phytoestrogens?

These are plant substances that are structurally similar to oestrogen and can therefore bind to oestrogen receptors. Examples of plants that contain phytoestrogens include hops, soya, red clover and yams. However, in addition to phytoestrogens, plant substances can also contain other natural ingredients with hormone-like effects that are said to have a positive effect on hormone levels. Examples of this include monk's pepper or ashwagandha.

Focus on men

When it comes to men's health, the focus is often on physical performance, muscle function, energy, testosterone levels and libido. Below we present some herbal raw materials that are typically found in men's health products.

#men's healthMacawurzel

Maca root

In traditional Peruvian medicine, maca is used to increase libido and stamina, to vitalize the body and as a mood enhancer and anti-stress agent. It is also said to have a balancing effect on hormone levels. In general, the root can look back on a very long history of traditional use, but the study situation is inconsistent and modern studies have not yet provided any evidence that maca can directly increase testosterone levels.

#men's healthTragant

Chinese tragacanth

The tragacanth root, also known as astragalus, is used in traditional Chinese medicine. This attributes a vitality-enhancing, stress-relieving and immune-regulating effect to the plant. An influence on the sex hormones is not known.

#men's healthGinsengwurzel

Red ginseng

It is also used within TCM to reduce stress and exhaustion, increase physical and mental performance and boost libido and potency. There are several studies that have investigated whether ginseng can naturally increase testosterone, but the modern study situation on the subject is inconsistent.

#men's healthAshwagandha um ganzen und gemahlen

Ashwagandha

The positive effects mentioned for women can also be listed here - ashwagandha is said to be stress-reducing and calming and to lower cortisol levels. Some studies have shown that taking ashwagandha can naturally increase testosterone levels and improve sperm quality.

#men's healthJohannisbeeren

Currants

Currants are said to increase vitality and reduce fatigue. According to some studies, the berries are also said to protect muscle cells, blood vessels and the heart through their antioxidant effect and improve regeneration after training.

Similarities between hormone balance supplements for men and women

Whether for women's or men's health - many herbal raw materials are aimed at reducing stress and boosting vitality. Stress is considered one of the biggest disruptive factors for a stable hormone balance.

While some plant substances show evidence of a direct effect on hormones, the study situation is often still limited. Therefore, these effects should not be advertised as proven.

Vitamins and minerals that have been proven to fulfill important functions provide a solid basis - selenium, for example, contributes to normal sperm formation.
